Kate, first, you have to be aware that just like the U.S., Germany, too, has always been made up of states. We're talking here about the German state of Saxony (in German: Sachsen), the capital of which is Dresden, and the largest city in which is Leipzig.
There would be no birth certificate for Elise Kohl. The state of Saxony did not introduce the civil registration of births, deaths, and marriages until 1876.All that would be available would be Elise Kohl's church baptismal record. To obtain a copy of that, you would have to know two things:First, you would have to know her religious denomination.Second, Dresden is a big city with numerous churches. So you would have to know just where in Dresden this family lived, so that you would be able to determine which church in Dresden they attended.
