Janet, first a bit of background:

You have to be aware that just like the U.S., Germany, too, has always been made up of states.

Deidesheim is located in the region of western Germany on the Rhine River known as the PALATINATE (in German: Pfalz). The people you're interested in were thus PALATINES, as the inhabitants of the Palatinate are called.

Although not contiguous with Bavaria -- that is, they do not share a common border -- the Palatinate was governed as part of the German state of Bavaria (in German: Bayern; capital: Munich) from 1816 to 1945. The Palatinate's administrative seat during that time period was the city of Speyer. During the 130 years that the Palatinate was governed as part of Bavaria, it was often referred to, because of its location on the Rhine River, as Rhenish Bavaria (in German: Rheinbayern).

Following World War II and the break-up of the vast German state of Prussia (in German: Preussen; capital: Berlin) by the Allies, the southern half of the Prussian Rhineland or Rhine Province (capital: Koblenz), the Bavarian Palatinate, and the region of the state of Hesse (in German: Hessen) known as Rhenish Hesse (in German: Rheinhessen) combined to form today's new postwar German state of Rhineland-Palatinate (in German: Rheinland-Pfalz), with the Rhenish Hessian city of Mainz as its capital. Deidesheim is thus located in the Palatinate portion of today's German state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

I might add here that the Palatines were not exactly thrilled about coming under Bavarian rule in 1816, and were just as well pleased to be separated from Bavaria again in 1946.

I will also mention here that the small city of Deidesheim is famous for its wine, this part of the Palatinate in general being famous for its wine.

As to Maria Klug's first marriage (she would have been called Maria, by the way, not Anna): Weddings traditionally take place where the bride lives. It's possible that Maria Klug was not herself from Deidesheim, but rather, from another nearby town, and that Georg Stahl was from Deidesheim. If this was the case, then the wedding would have taken place in Maria's hometown, and they then would have lived in Deidesheim, Georg's hometown. That's a possibility. (Doesn't the Jakob Schädler marriage record name Maria's place of birth?)

As I would suggest to anybody with Palatine ancestry, you should contact the Institute for Palatine History and Folk Life (Institut fur pfälzische Geschichte und Volkskunde) in Kaiserslautern and ask what information they may have on file about any Palatine families you might be interested in. Here is their e-mail address:

info at institut.bv-pfalz.de

(Naturally, you replace "at" with "@")

Out of curiosity, how are you related to Maria Klug?

Robert
