Carla, first, you have to be aware that like the U.S., Germany has always been made up of states. The towns you are interested in are located in the region of western Germany on the Rhine River known as the Palatinate (in German: Pfalz). Andreas Balder and Maria Erhard were thus Palatines. Because of its location on the Rhine River, the Palatinate is often referred to as the Rhenish Palatinate (in German: Rheinpfalz). Although not contiguous with Bavaria -- that is, they do not share a common border -- the Palatinate was governed as part of the German state of Bavaria (in German: Bayern; capital: Munich) from 1816 to 1945. The administrative seat of the Palatinate during that time was the city of Speyer. The Palatinate was separated from the main body of Bavaria by about 60 miles. Following World War II and the break-up of the vast German state of Prussia (in German: Preussen; capital: Berlin) by the Allies, the southern half of the Prussian Rhineland or Rhine Province (capital: Koblenz), the Bavarian Palatinate (Pfalz), and the region of the pre-1945 state of Hesse known as Rhenish Hesse (in German: Rheinhessen) combined to form today's new postwar western German state of Rhineland-Palatinate (in German: Rheinland-Pfalz), with the Rhenish Hessian city of Mainz as its capital. The city of Rockenhausen and the village of Bisterschied are thus located in the Palatinate portion of today's German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Rockenhausen is a city of about 5500 people today, Bisterschied a village of about 260 people. Bisterschied is about 5 miles west of Rockenhausen. Rockenhausen and Bisterschied are about 15 miles north of the city of Kaiserslautern. If your map of Germany isn't detailed enough to show Rockenhausen and Bisterschied, it should certainly show Kaiserslautern, which is a city of close to 100,000 people.
