Many thanks to Konni, we are trying to substantiate the old story about "Barons" and a castle in Heimbach on Smith Genforum. There is, it turns out, a Hengebach Castle in Heimbach, so that much at least is true. Both the castle and the town of Heimbach burned in 1687. Heimbach was rebuilt but the castle was not restored until 1904.
Heimbach was in the Duchy of Julich which changed hands many times, eventually belonging to Rhineland-Pflaz. All of that is posted in some detail on Smith Genforum.
Also courtesy of Konni, we have this link to see a photograph of the church where our Schmidt ancestors were married over three centuries ago: http://www.evangelische-kirchengemeinde-baumholder.de/ which is where Hans Veit Schmidt of Heimbach married in 1680 to Eva Agnes of Ruschberg, which is part of the city of Baumholder and four miles from Heimbach. It is also the church where their grandson, our ancestor Dewalt Schmidt, was christened as "Theobald Schmitt" 14 March 1724. I have emailed the church at evkgm.baumholder@online.de and also emiailed the Lutheran Evangelische Church in Katzweiler 32 miles away at Pfarr.katzweiler@evkirchepfalz.de but for some reason got a "failure notice" back from that attempt. That is the church where Theobald married as "Dewalt Schmidt" 10 September 1743 to Magdalena Karsten 10 September 1743. She bore him the four sons, before she died, he emigrated with in 1749 for Pennsylvania.
