Earl, this is just so that all your information is accurate, because there are a number of inaccuracies in your posting: First -- and this naturally of the most vital importance -- there is no such name in Germany as "Kunker"! The surname you're actually thinking of is KÜNKER -- or if written without the "Umlaut" (two dots) over the "U", KUENKER. Künker or Kuenker is pronounced completely differently, completely differently than "Kunker" would be pronounced. Next, a language matter: "Hannover" is simply German for "Hanover", just like "Deutschland" is German for "Germany". So you're actually referring to HANOVER. Just like the U.S., Germany, too, has always been made up of STATES. Hermann (note correct spelling) Heinrich Künker was neither born nor married in "Essen, Hanover, Prussia"! When Hermann Heinrich Künker was born in 1760 and when he was married in 1787, the German state in which the town of ESSEN was located was the PRINCE-BISHOPRIC OF OSNABRÜCK -- or if written without the "Umlaut" (two dots) over the "U", OSNABRUECK -- the capital of which was the city of the same name. It was not until 1803 that the Prince-Bishopric of Osnabrück (Osnabrueck) became part of the German state of HANOVER, the capital of which was the city of Hanover. And it was not until 1867 that the state of Hanover was annexed by the German state of PRUSSIA, thus becoming what was then until 1945 to remain the Prussian province of Hanover. Following World War II and the break-up of the vast state of Prussia by the Allies, the Prussian province of Hanover, the state of Oldenburg, and the two very small states of Brunswick (in German: Braunschweig) and Schaumburg-Lippe combined to form today's new postwar German state of LOWER SAXONY (in German: Niedersachsen), with the city of Hanover as its capital. In 1902, the town of Essen was officially recognized as a spa, and thus since 1902 has been called BAD ESSEN. ("Bad" -- pronounced: baht -- is German for "bath". All officially recognized spas in Germany have "Bad" in front of their names.) Bad Essen is located about 15 miles (or 25 km) east of the city of Osnabrück (Osnabrueck). I've told you these things because it is of course of the utmost importance that all your information is accurate. Robert Notify Administrator about this message?
