Use the 1900 and later censuses to pin down the year of immigration. If it appears to be 1897 or after, you can search index to NY immigration records (earlier records are not yet indexed). The records will tell you where they came from. They employ soundex system for indexing (Eckstein is E-235). If they came before 1897, you can try finding them on index to Hamburg passenger ships. If earlier than 1890, check Germans to America book series. All microfilms for census, immigration, Hamburg index available through LDS family history centers. Germans to America may be available in larger public or genealogical libraries.
