One of the first things that you learn as a genealogist is that you take family stories with a hefty grain of salt. It would seem that all evidence points to Martin being born in Slovenia. On this death record, it indicates Yugoslavia as his place of birth. A study of the history of the area will tell you of the changing borders over time and, hence, the changing names:
