Debbie, now the situation is clear to me. These are not your ancestors, but rather, you are helping a family in Wisconsin with their ancestors.
One thing still has me puzzled:
You say that this family you're helping claims to have gotten this obviously incorrect "Stettin, Saxony" from a census.Well, I have meanwhile found this family in Hustisford, Dodge Co., Wisconsin, in the U.S. censuses of 1860, 1870 and 1880, and place of birth in all three of those censuses is shown as PRUSSIA.Saxony is not shown as place of birth for anybody in that family in any of those three censuses.Further, a U.S. census shows state or country of birth. It would be highly unusual for a census to show city and state or city and country as a person's place of birth to begin with. And from your reply to me, it seems that you yourself feel that the family was from Prussia, not Saxony. My question:
In which census exactly does this family claim to have found this "Stettin, Saxony"?Needless to say, I would love to take a look at that census entry.
Yes, Krüger -- or if written without the "Umlaut" (two dots) over the "u", Krueger -- ranks among the 25 most common surnames in Germany.
I would appreciate your getting back to me about that census entry. It's peaked my curiosity!
Robert
