Ok, I understand most of this, and I'm Canadian not American.
I understand that you can possess a grave for 15-20 years then it must be renewed or its removed. The cemeteries we visited were in small towns so I assume they were all local ("normal") people.
I'm confused about the field graves, is this an area where they bury the casket for 5 years then remove the bones and put them in the grave or is there nothing in the grave where the headstone is?Are the bones taken to a vault to be stored? Many of the headstones we saw were dated back 100 years, some more, some less.
In many cemeteries where a person had recently died the ground and flowers would be in a large mound, but to small for a casket to be buried horizontally.
In Switzerland there seemed to be an area in the cemetery where most of the recent deaths were buried and a wooden cross and black vail would mark a small grave site.
Thank you for your help answering my questions, Danke.
