Your first problem is to establish WHICH of the several Steinhöfel your ancestors came from. Yes, 'Steinhöfel' (or 'Steinhoefel', if you cannot do umlauts on your computer:
1) Steinhöfel, county Angermünde, Brandenburg
2) Steinhöfel, county Friedeberg, Brandenburg
3) Steinhöfel, county Lebus, Brandenburg
4) Steinhöfel, county Saatzig, Pommerania
German gazetteers do not know of any location going as 'Steinhoffel'. And there is no 'Steinhofel' either.
I am not sure which of those may be 'your place'. But you probably have more information, after all you told that "Another lot of christoffels came to aust in 1885 and 1890 from the same village" .... maybe you have some discerning information with any of those other Christoffels ? It is necessary to figure which of the several Steinhöfel ist was, because the three Steinhöfel in Brandenburg are very very close to each other.
Now, with vital records ('BMD' in Australia) being maintained at the
local level .... you see the problem.
If I was in your shoes, I would go to http://list.genealogy.net/mm/listinfo/brandenburg-l/http://list.genealogy.net/mm/listinfo/brandenburg-l/ and subscribe in the digest mode [click the yes button above the 'subscribe' button] and then ask on that mailinglist. It is more location specific than this Germany-board, and it also is far more active.
