Janice, a few things:
First and most importantly, there is no such name in Germany as "Freeman"!Freeman is an English name.So whatever source you got that from is an erroneous source. What was your source?I have the strong feeling that it was some American source. Before you can really proceed, you are of course going to have to determine what the correct German surname was.
In the 1900 U.S. census, son Joseph is "Joseph C. Sass".In Germany, the second given name is as important as the first!Do you know what the "C." stands for?
What is the source of your information that he left Germany from Hamburg specifically?
A question always of the most vital importance in German genealogy:What was his religious denomination?
And last but not least, you say he took on his mother's maiden "because of the times".What do you mean by that?I would say we're talking here about the 1870s.What was going on in the 1870s?
