Bonnie, you're not exactly correct when you refer to Johann Hess of KOBLENZ (old spelling: Coblenz).I'll explain:
Passenger arrival records show Anna Hess, age 23, and son Harry Hess, age 6 months, arriving in New York on 14 November 1923 on a ship called the "Muenchen" (which is German for "Munich"), which had set sail from the port city of Bremen, Germany.
The passenger arrival record does indicate Anna's last place of residence as having been the city of Koblenz -- (the "C" spelling was an old spelling no longer used today). But Koblenz was not her place of birth! Her place of birth, as well as that of son Harry, is indicated as having been the town of NAUORT.Nauort is also indicated as the town where Anna's father Johann Hess was residing at the time.Nauort is located about 12 miles or 20 km north of Koblenz.
Passenger arrival records show Agnes Hess, age 35, arriving in New York on 21 August 1926, on the same ship that Anna and Harry had come over on three years before. She indicated that she would be joining the Staughtons in Washington, D.C.
Like Anna in 1923, Agnes's last place of residence is also indicated as Koblenz. But also like Anna, her place of birth was NAUORT.Whereas Anna indicated her father Johann Hess in Nauort as her nearest relative in country of origin, Agnes indicated her brother Wilhelm Hess in Nauort as her nearest relative in country of origin. That seems at least to indicate that Anna and Agnes's father Johann may have died sometime between 1923 and 1926.
You will note that Agnes was about 9 years older than Anna.
Nauort, by the way, is a town of about 2300 people today, Koblenz a city of about 100,000 people.
I hope this has been of at least some help to you.
Robert
