You should obtain Ferdinand's naturalization record to see if there is additional information about his place of birth. Also, since Fred & Helen were married in Wisconsin, you should obtain a copy of the church marriage record (vs. the county clerk's record) as it often contained a lot more detailed information.
There also seems to be a reference to Fred in the History of Barron County, Wisconsin, which may prove useful. It was published in 1922.Also an obituary in Green County in Wisconsin in 1918:
