There was no census in Germany in that time period because there was no country Germany yet in that time period!That didn't happen until 1871!And censuses play practically no role in German genealogy to begin with.So you can cross censuses off your list.
Like the U.S., Germany, too, has always been made up of states.Schornsheim is located in the region known as Rhenish Hesse (in German: Rheinhessen), which was part of the former German state of Hesse-Darmstadt, the capital of which was the city of Darmstadt.
I will also mention that in Germany, there is no such name as "Lowenstein".In Germany, the name you're referring to is Löwenstein, or if written without the "Umlaut" (two dots) over the "o", Loewenstein.
You say that you have not been able to find any information on this family.I take that to mean that you are not aware that prior to World War II, the Löwenstein family was a rather prominent Jewish family in Schornsheim?
