Carol, like the U.S., Germany has always been made up of states. We're talking here about the southern German state of Bavaria (in German: Bayern), the capital of which is the city of Munich.Bavaria covers an area about half that covered by the U.S. state of New York.
The Hamburg departure records indicate the family's last place of residence as Neuses (pronounced: NOY-zess).You would be in trouble here, because there are about 12 towns in Bavaria named Neuses. However, the town of birth you mention for some of the Uttenreuthers fortunately takes care of that problem. There is no town called "Hollendorf".But I recognized which town you were actually referring to.You're actually referring to the town of Hallerndorf. And from that, I knew which of the several towns called Neuses was the one where some of the Uttenreuther family had lived.
Hallerndorf and the Neuses in question (in full: Neuses an der Regnitz; in English: Neuses on the Regnitz) are located in the region of northern Bavaria known as Upper Franconia (in German: Oberfranken), the administrative seat of which is the city of Bayreuth (pronounced: bye-ROYT).The nearest larger city to Hallerndorf and Neuses is Forchheim.I should mention that Neuses is no longer an independent town.Today, Neuses is part of the town of Eggolsheim.
Am I correct in assuming that the Uttenreuther family was Roman Catholic?
Robert
