About 1/3rd of modern day Poland used to be controlled by Germany. Poland, in turn, had to give up a large amount of it's eastern territories to the Soviet Union. So, the Germany that you lived in was only born in 1945.
A part of pre-war Germany (East Prussia) was so far east it had a common border with the Soviet Union.
Post WWII Germany was full of refugees from these eastern territories. Some where resettled in the new Germany and some were allowed to emigrate to whatever countries would take them.
It is not wise to pick a familiar surname name off the internet and assume that person has a connection with those you are researching. All connections are made by finding a reliable paper trail. A lot of the stuff that is posted on Familysearch.org was collected by amatuers and is loaded with errors.
