How do I find a count? Gnesen/Gniezno

Hi all

I'm trying to find a county in what was once germany but now Poland. I mean county litteraly too, as in lands belonging to a count. My grandfather and his mother grew up on the estate of a count who lived in or near Gnesen Germany, which is now Gniezno Poland. The counts name was probably Schwitalski, or some similar variation. My grandmother refers to the estate as Grafschaft Gnesen, Graf meaning count, schaft meaning land I suppose, by or at Gnesen. The count went and died without wife or children , then world war 2 started and everything went to hell. The estate is in Poland now, not even sure what the nature of the estate was, was it a castle, a mansion, a manor, don't know......apparently it took a day to ride around it on a horse though. Have no idea what its called now either. How many real "counties" could there have been around gnesen anyway? is there a list of minor german nobility lands somewhere where i can find out? The gniezno website just bounces my emails back at me, anybody know of a way to find anything out? I'd love to have a picture of it. thanks alot.

marc
