Walton, you mention marriage records.German churches in the U.S. tended to keep rather detailed records.If Valentin and Mary were married in Baltimore after coming to the U.S., chances are good that their church marriage record would include the name of the town where they were born.The marriage record on file with the city of Baltimore would probably indicate nothing more than "Hesse-Darmstadt", but the marriage record on file at the church where they got married would very likely name the town.If you don't know what church they were married in, the Baltimore city marriage record would include the name of the clergyman who performed the ceremony, and from that, you could determine what church it was.
German churches in the U.S. also often included exact birthplaces of parents in the baptismal records of children.I would thus also suggest that you try to obtain copies of the baptismal records of Valentin and Mary's children.
