In my line there is a Johannes Balthaser Durr that changed his name, or his dad, Gasper, changed it to John Baltzer Tarr. I believe that the change from Durr to Tarr or even Darr was a result of the names being "Americanized."
Gasper and family camve from Germany in the 1700's, probably around 1750's.
Here is all I have so far, any more info anyone can provide would be appreciated:
The original ancestor of the Tarr family, in America was Gasper Tarr (Durr) who was a native of Germany and came to this country before 1760, John B. son of Gasper Tarr came to Westmoreland County PA from Maryland and took possession of several hundred acres of farm land. He was a potter by trade as his father had been and was a member of the Lutheran Church.
Gasper Tarr, son of John B. was born in 1762 and died in 1843 at the age of 81 years. He settled on a tract of land near what is now Tarr Station and followed Agricultural pursuits and distilling of whiskeys under the old copper still process.
He bore the reputation of being a well educated man and served for thirty years as Justice of the Peace. He was a Republican in politics and a Methodist in his religious affiliations. His influence was largely responsible for the growth of Methodism in that section. He was a soldier in the War of 1812 and helped to build Reid Station on the Allegheny river near Kitanning.
He married in 1789, Ann Reid who was of Scotch-Irish decent and who was reared in Cheater county, Pennsylvania near the famous Brandywine Battle field.
