Sarah, like the U.S., Germany has always been made up of states. Odensachsen was a small village located in what was until 1866 the German state of Electoral Hesse (in German: Kurhessen), the capital of which was the city of Kassel. From its capital city, Electoral Hesse (Kurhessen) was often referred to simply as Hesse-Kassel (or to use the older spelling, Hesse-Cassel). As an Electorate, Hesse-Kassel's reigning monarch was an Elector (in German: Kurfürst). Like most of Germany's major states, Electoral Hesse (Kurhessen) or Hesse-Kassel sided with Austria against the German state of Prussia (in German: Preussen; capital: Berlin) in the Austro-Prussian War, or Seven Weeks War, of 1866. Among the other German states siding with Austria in that war were Hesse-Kassel's neighbors, the state of Nassau (capital: Wiesbaden) and the state of Hesse-Darmstadt (capital: city of Darmstadt). Austria and her allies were defeated. Hesse-Darmstadt was allowed to retain its independence, but Prussia annexed Hesse-Kassel, Nassau, and the up to that time Free City of Frankfurt and combined the three territories into what was then until 1945 to remain the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau, with the city of Kassel as its capital. Following World War II and the break-up of the vast state of Prussia by the Allies, most of the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau and most (but not all) of the 1919-1945 state of Hesse (the former Hesse-Darmstadt) combined to form today's new postwar central German state of Hesse (in German: Hessen), with the city of Wiesbaden, Nassau's former capital, as its capital. The former Electoral Hesse (Kurhessen) or Hesse-Kassel forms the northern and eastern portions of today's state of Hesse (Hessen). Odensachsen is no longer an independent village. Odensachsen was one of 15 small towns and villages that combined in 1971 to form a new town that gave itself the name Haunetal, which translates as "Haune Valley", the Haune being a small river that flows through the area. So today, Odensachsen is a section of Haunetal. Haunetal, located between the cities of Bad Hersfeld and Fulda, is a town of about 3000 people today, of whom about 200 live in Odensachsen. Church records are the primary source of family information in German genealogical research. What was the religious denomination of these people you're interested in?
