Rudy, you were looking at the wrong line on the ship manifest! You were looking at the place of birth of the person above Adam Funk. Adam Funk's place of birth is clearly indicated on the manifest as having been Thurnhosbach. (What would the Funk family ever have been doing in faraway Russia?!) As to the Elser side of your family: Your great-great-grandfather, Patrizius Elser -- ("Patrizius" is the German equivalent of the English name "Patrick") -- was chirstened at the Catholic church in the town of Hohenstadt in what was at that time the District (in German: Oberamt) of Aalen in what was until 1945 the southwestern German state of Württemberg -- or if written without the "Umlaut" (two dots) over the "u", Wuerttemberg -- the capital of which was the city of Stuttgart. The people of Württemberg, by the way, are known as Swabians (in German: Schwaben). Following World War II, the state of Baden (capital: Karlsruhe), the state of Württemberg, and the very small Prussian province of Hohenzollern (capital: Sigmaringen) combined to form today's postwar southwestern German state of Baden-Württemberg (Baden-Wuerttemberg), with the city of Stuttgart as its capital. Hohenstadt is no longer an independent town. In 1972, Hohenstadt was one of five towns annexed by the nearby town of Abtsgmünd -- or if written without the "Umlaut" over the "u", Abtsgmuend. So today, Hohenstadt is a section of Abtsgmünd. Through your local Family History Center, you can obtain and view on microfilm the Catholic church records of Hohenstadt (OA Aalen) covering the years 1581 to 1920 -- (and don't forget the useful "Family Register"!) (Actually there are two versions of these records available. There is also a version covering the years 1580 to 1921. The contents of each of the two versions vary slightly.)
