I just received a copy of Frank Smith's marriage license. It indicates that his father's name was also Frank Smith (so I think your correct about the Americanization of the name, although family lore (myth) has always been that the original surname was something completely unrelated to "Smith" or "Schmidt"). The marriage license also indicates that his mother's name was Amelia ???? (something like Melindolf, Uelindolf, Kelindolf, or mabye --dorf; I can't for the life of me make it out). It also indicates that he was born in Prussia (which I believe included Hessen Kassel for a time).

Frustrating thing is that I actually lived in Kassel for a summer during college, but of course knew none of my family history at the time.
