Help finding original surname

I know this is a longshot, but I'm hoping someone can help me figure out my ggg-grandfather's original surname.

He emigrated to the U.S. probably in the late 1860's or 1870, enlisted in the 2nd U.S. Cavalry in Philadelphia on March 8, 1870 as a musician, and was known as "FRANCIS SMITH" throughout his life in the U.S. The only other info. I have is that he was born in Hessen Kassel in 1843 or 1844, both of his parents were born in Hessen Kassel, and based on the 1870 census, he was a naturalized citizen at that time. Based on his children's names, his parents first names may have been Frederick and Anna.

Can anyone help me?
