A remarakable diary of Michael Friedrich Radke might be of interest to you. He was the son of farmer Christian Friedrich Radke in Kyowsthal near the Battlement of Old Stettin, Kingdom of Prussia, Germany. The diary tells the story of his voyage from his home to Bremen and then by ship to Baltimore. The trip lasted from March 5 to April 28, 1848. You can learn why people left Prussia at that time for America. Find it here: http://hometown.aol.com/lhchristen/1848.htm Bremen had opened trade with America shortly after the Revolutionary War, and imported tobacco and flour from Baltimore and tobacco, cotton and sugar from New Orleans. Emigrants filled the ships on the journey west. Here is a good historical article about this: http://www.emslanders.com/Emigration%20Ports%20Bremen.htm I hope this helps you. I had ancestors who sailed from Bremen as well. Notify Administrator about this message?
