Robert - thank you for that information.the family concerned were bakers in Spitalfields in London during the mid 1700sThey also had a sugar refining business in London, Wiple & Beeswank, a partner in which was John Beeswank.
I know at the time there was an influx of people from Germany to London who were sugar bakers in Spitalfields and I wondered whether he might have been known by a derivation of where he came from rather than his surname simply for ease.
It is a name which i am unable to trace anywhere else and as it had been suggested to me that there was a Bieswank or Bieswang in Bavaria I thought it was worth finding out if this could have been the case, since I am at a complete loss with the name or its derivation.
In great Britain surnames were used to give places names and often Knights who were given land gave that name to the place.Alternatively professions or occupations such as fletcher, butcher, mason, were used as surnames.
Thanks again for the information which has helped me eliminate another avenue of enquiry. If you do have any theory on the connection between the german sugar bakers and the name I would be grateful for your thoughts.
Elizabeth
