Bill,
I and several other DeHaven researchers have been looking for years for the ancestors of Evert In den Hoffen/DeHaven, so we will be very interested in what you dig up.One of our club members was fortunate to visit St Peter's Reformed Church in Mulheim where some of the records are located. We know that Evert lived in Menden, near Mulheim, and attended church in Mulhiem because it was the closest Reformed Church. The record of Evert and Elizabeth's marriage and baptismal records for some of their children are located there.
Evert, Lisebiet, and 4 children entered America before 1698. The Historian of the Old Swedes Church in Germantown said that the family was among the founders of the church and of the town of Germantown. This is also supported by the history of the North and South Hampton Dutch Reformed Church and the Register of Huguenot Ancestory. Evert bought land and lived on the Skippack Pike near Blue Bell.
The DeHavens had been in Westphalia, living at Menden, near Mulheim, for an un-determined period of time.a Johan In den Haven was found living in Menden in 1556. Wilhelm In den Hoven married Grete Aufon Kampfe in Mulheim in 1626. We do not know how the two men were related to us, but it is likely that they were our ancestors. The persecution of the protestants (at one time a majority of the population of France) had been going on for many years. Our ancestors were among those, obviously, who escaped with their lives. It is likely that the family lived in more than one country before going to Menden. Jehu DeHaven, grandson of William, wrote that they were Walloon Huguenots, indicating that they spent some time in Flanders. There were people with a similar name in Belgium as late as 1600.
Regarding the DeHaven-Supplee connection:I show that Modlin DeHaven who married Hance Supplee was Evert's granddaughter. Her son, Andrew Supplee, and Mary Zimmerman were the parents of Magdalena Supplee born 6 Sept 1765 and died 06 Aug 1836 in Tuscawarus Co., Ohio. Her husband was Thomas Smith Taylor.I have no data for her beyond this point.
The DeHaven Club ( www.dehavenclub.org ) and other DeHaven researchers are tryin to record the descendants of Evert and Elizabeth.I will be happy to share information.
