DEMBSKEY/DOMSKI/DOEMSKI

Hi all,

My father (Rudolph: 1935 - ) and grandfather's (Rudolph: ? - ?) surname is DEMBSKEY and both were born in South Africa. Family legend has it that it was originally DÖMSKI but was changed to DEMBSKEY when my great-grandfather arrived in South Africa. To add a bit of confusion, I have found a DEMBSKEY living in the USA in 1924. As the spelling of the surname is so unusual I am inclined to believe there is a relation, but I suppose the same spelling error could have occured twice, once in South Africa and once in the USA.

My great-grandfather is Frederic Albert Henry DÖMSKI. We know that Frederic Albert Henry DÖMSKI came to South Africa from New York on 21 Mar 1889, possibly on the Stratford. However, he was born somewhere in Germany, probably Berlin or to the east of Berlin. At the same time some family moved to South West Africa (Namibia), as Frederic used to correspond with someone there, possibly his sister. He married Johanna PRETORIUS.

It is at this point that we have no further information about Frederic and his family and would like to track down the German connection.

Can you add anything to my family history?

Thanks ofr your time!

Evan
