GUTER surname: Searching for info. on my grt grdfather Joseph Guter

Hi,

I am interested in finding information on my great-grandfather, Joseph Guter. The family thought he was Polish because he came from Poland- Austria to the USA, but a special volunteer has opened my eyes to the reality that the name "Guter" did not appear Polish but of German decent; something of which I never would have thought. Another finding is that it appears the name is Jewish. Can anyone validate this information please? I was raised Roman Catholic.

If anyone has insight on this surname and the knowledge that it is German, that would help my research tremendously. Also, if you know of any GUTER'S that I could connect with, that would be terrific!
