Because of the last few postings concerning these families of Lawrence/Martin Counties Indiana, I have some questions; I too, am related to both of these lines. I would LOVE to have pictures of ancestors of these families. It would be nice to have pictures of my actual direct ancestors. However, if that is not possible, photos of their siblings or children would still be wonderful. I have found out that Shoals, Indiana, had at least two well-known photographers when daguerreotypes were first popular in the U.S., starting around 1841. I THINK I have a picture of Phylura Harding, third wife of Sam Gerking. She lived in the Shoals area, and for several reasons, I think it is her. After 1860, tin types were more common because they were cheaper and easier to reproduce. Of course, the Civil War helped promote them, too. But, the way I understand it, even some of the poorest of people had at least one photo taken of themselves prior to that, and it cost them about $4.00,, which was a lot back in the mid-1800's. They would then pass it down to their favorite child or relative. I descend from Samuel Gerking, a son of John (Johann) Sr. and his wife, Rachel Rice. Sam and Phylura were my grandmother's maternal grandparents. I DO have a picture of Jonathan Rice Gerking, and some of his descendants. He was two years younger than Sam. It is amazing how much these people favored my grandmother, Mary Jane Barnes, and her brothers. She married Levi Terrell, whose mother was Rachel Johnson (Terrell). She was of the same family as John Jehu Johnson, mentioned in a message from Karen on this forum. She was born in 1823 in North Carolina, but did not die until February of 1903, and was buried in the Huron cemetery. I have never seen any pictures of her nor of her siblings. She was a daughter of John Johnson and his wife, Sarah Barnes. Their children were; ELIZABETH LURANNA JAMES SUSANNAH THOMAS JEHU RACHEL HANNAH JOHN MILES I have been in touch recently with cousins who descended from both James and Jehu, and it was very interesting. One even remember my grandpa Levi! I was only ten months old when he died. I know this message partly includes the Johnson family, but the surname is so common, it is very difficult to find any common ground on a Johnson website. Anyone may E-mail me at; pfgard@juno.com Thanks! Penny Notify Administrator about this message?
