I found JAMES GHERKING, son of Rachel Rice and John Gherking, in the 1850 census of Martin Co., Indiana, Halbert Township. He must have been born around 1801. I would love to hear from anyone who is a direct descendant of his. His younger brother, Samuel, was my great-great grandfather; he was born four or five years later. . He also spelled his name with a 'g'.
