Hi!
I'm afraid I can't tell you who Joseph's parents were, but I can tell you with almost full certainy who his grandparents were.
My great-great grandfather was SAMUEL GERKING (or Gerken, Gerkin, take your pick of spellings) and he was born around 1810. He was the next to the youngest child born to JOHN GERKIN and RACHEL RICE. It is a sure bet they were the only ones in that area for many miles around with that surname. John was a German immigrant.
My Sam and his siblings were born in Jefferson Co, KY, close to Louisville, and then the family moved to Orange Co., Indiana, which later was divided into Lawrence Co.. Sam married his first wife in Orange Co.,and then she died, and he married again in Martin Co. I came thru his second marriage.
I am not sure if he had a son Joseph by his first wife or not, but you can bet that if he wasn't his son by his first marriage, Joseph was probably a nephew of his.
I am still trying to gather info on his descendants, and also of his siblings.
