Gerhardt Family Genealogy Forum

The DNA-testing is a lunatic idea. Are you aware that in Europe the name Gerhrd and Gerhardt are common, and used as first name and surname? I have a complete family tree started in 1550 which started as Gerhard. This family originates from Steinbach (Hessen-Germany). Of this family people migrated to Russia, Holland and the United States. They use the surnames abroad as Gerhard/Gerhardt/Gerharts. Making my family tree I saw also other families with the same name, but with no connection. The same applies for family names Visser/Fischer, Jansen/Johnson and so on. The registration of family names started with our French friend Emporor Napeleon. All people should have a registration name, so firstnames became surnames, like Pieter i.g. Pietersen (Pieter's son).
