I am probably not related to your Girards but i thought would take a look see at the censuses.
I found James and Angeline in Buffalo 12th ward Erie co. NY P. O. North Buffalo In 1860 census:
Cooper James 37 b Ireland occ Cooper
Angeline 27 b Canada
Matilda J 7 b NY
William A 5 b NY
Mary J 2 b NY

I 1870 census I find them in Illinois in the city of Homer will co. P.O. Goodings Grove:
Cooper James 50 b Ireland occ Cooper
Angeline 38 b Canada
Jane 17
William 15
Ida 12
Melissa 9
Eliza 5
Rhoda 1
Elizabeth 4/12

One house away lived a Angeline Girard living with a Alfonze Austin:
Austin Alfonze 24 b NY
Austin Florence 6/12 mos old
Girard Angeline age 63 b Canada Housekeeper

This may be Angeline Coopers mom.
Hope this helps. Good luck. I did not look for Fred Girard in the censuses but I have heard of him.
