GERETY Families in NJ & NY 1850s & 1860s
GERETY is also spelled Garretty, Geraghty, Garraty, and possibly Gerrity in various records found so far.
Looking for information on great great grandmother Ann A. (DUNN) GERETY, her husband, Francis, and their 3 children, all of whom who resided in Brooklyn, NY during the 1850s, but may have had relatives or close friends in Paterson, NJ or vicinity. According to the New York Herald, Ann GERETY died in Paterson, NJ on Tuesday evening, March 10, 1863, aged 35 years. Her funeral was held on March 13, 1863 at St. Paul's Church in Brooklyn. An obituary, perhaps in the Paterson Daily Guardian, might indicate who she was visiting, cause of death, and/or place of burial, none of which I have been able to find in New York.
Her husband, Francis GERETY who was a cotton merchant in NYC, died at sea around the same time, leaving three young children, Elizabeth Ann (b. 17 Feb 1851), John (b. 1852), and Joseph (b. 1 Oct 1855), who may have been taken in by relatives or placed in orphanages. Elizabeth Ann was supposedly in a convent school in New Jersey when she eloped with my great grandfather, John FOLEY, ca. 1866-67. Joseph GERETY was "educated in Madison, N.J. and at Seaton Hall College" according to his obituary in the New York Times (30 July 1887). Any help in connecting my ancestors to specific people, places, or institutions in northern New Jersey would be greatly appreciated.
