BROWN, WORLEY, WEHRLE, CASEY, ROBINSON
My grandfather was station agent in Yulee, Florida, Baldwin, Florida and Camden area of Georgia in 1920.He married Katherine Casey September 18, 1920 in Camden. His hame at that time was Alfred Leslie Worley.
I received the following newspaper Account of my grandfather's death:
WOMAN FINDS SPOUSE DEAD - Hilt Man Suicides After Suffering Headaches Several Days
Charles Brown, 42, Southern Pacific station agent at Hilt, committed suicide Sunday morning by placing the muzzle of a .22 caliber rifle in his mouth and firing it.
His wife, in the next room, did not hear the report of the shot but head his body fall. He was lifeless when she found him on the floor.
The cause of this act is not known, as Brown always seemed to be in the best of spirits. He, however, had been complaining of severe headaches recently.
The Browns came to Hilt from Sacramento several months ago. He was a native of Pennsylvania and is survived by his wife and two children.
Coroner Felix J. Kunz was notified shortly after Mrs. Brown made her gruesome dicovery and late Sunday held an inquist at which a verdict was rendered to the effect that Brown died of self-inflicted gunshopt wound.
Although Brown had been at Hilt but a short time, he had made many friends b7y his jovial good nature, and was one of the Southern Pacific's most popular employees on the Shasta Division" This is from a paper in Yreka, CA about December 6, 1923.
Does anyone know anything about this Charles Brown???
In the last two years we have found my grandfather worked as a Telegrapher/Station agent under four different names and had two separate families that we know of. I have a gut feeling there are more. His real name is Leslie Ray Wehrle. He used the name Orville R. May, Alfred Leslie Worley and now Charles Brown while working in California.
We have no idea why he changed his name so much. My grandmother Bessie Edith Robinson married Leslie Wehrle 6/30/11 in Des Moines, Iowa - however marriage license/certificate says she married Orville R. May (she has six children with the Wehrle name - all delayed birth certificates); He became Alfred Leslie Worley after Bessie left in summer of 1920 pregnant with 6th child. He then married Katherine Casey in Camden Georgia in September 1920, had a daughter born in 1922 in Coos Bay, Oregon with certicate stating Charles Brown as father. On to Hilt where he died three weeks after a son was born.
My grandmother, Bessie, received word in 1924 that Leslie Wehrle had committed Suicide in late 1923 in Hilt CA. She collected widows benefits but not railroad benefits.
Does anyone know anything about this Charles Brown; Alfred Leslie Worley, Leslie Wehrle or Orville May?Thank you.
