I have found information stating that a John Thompson married a Catherine Twyman in Christ Church Parish of Middlesex County, Virginia. While many list the marriage as April 13, 1727, I believe that is an error. I believe it was actually April 13, 1721 (a numeral "1" and a numeral "7" can look alike in old handwritten records, especially if the quill pen was running dry of ink!). Furthermore, there are apparently baptismal/birth records for two daughters of this marriage, Jane in 1721 (d. 1724) and Catherine in 1724. I don't believe anyone has found any further records of children for this couple, at least not in Christ Church Parish??? While they might have moved away, it is my belief that Catherine (Twyman) Thompson died between 1724 and 1727, there in Middlesex County, and that John Thompson then remarried.
There is a Christ Church Parish record of his marriage to Susannah George in January 1728. Susannah George was the daughter of Robert and Sarah George of Middlesex County. John and Susannah named their second daughter, born in 1730, Jane. There is a Christ Church Parish record of other children as well, ending with a daughter Anna in 1741.
IF, my assessment is correct, and John Thompson did name a daughter Jane in 1721 and then, after her death in 1724, another daughter Jane in 1730, this MIGHT be evidence of his "attachment" to the name, and one possibility would be if his mother had been named Jane. Does anyone know the parents of this John Thompson, who was probably born between about 1690 and 1700, place unknown?
Several researchers who have published family trees on World Connect, www.rootsweb.com, suggest that this John Thompson died in Caroline County, Virginia in about 1750, and that Susannah died thereafter. None of these researchers has cited a source for this claim, however. Does anyone know if there is either a Will or an intestate estate, or an orphan's guardianship proceeding in court, concerning this John Thompson in Caroline County??
It is my belief that John and Susannah might have left Middlesex County about 1742 and perhaps they moved to Caroline County? Given Susannah (George) Thompson's estimated date of birth (1706-1710), it seems possible that she might have had more children after 1741, and I am working on a theory that they might have had a son about 1743 to 1746 that they named Robert (possibly after Susannah's father, Robert George). Does anyone know if there are parish records for births in Caroline County in the 1740s?
