Nichols/Van Zant/George in Arkansas
James B. Nichols, B. Frank Vanzant, and John N. George are found on the same U .S. Census page for Sharp Co., Arkansas, Davidson Twp., in 1880. James B. Nichols, and his wife, Sarah E. Hilton Nichols, had a daughter, Louisa C. Nichols who married I believe Thomas George, son of John N. George. On this 1880 census “Louisa George” is found living in James B. Nichols’ house hold. She is listed as a daughter, 17 years of age, a widow with a son named William George age 1. John N. George is found seven lines down from James B. Nichols’ family. Listed is his wife, Paulina R., age 54, b. in Tennessee; daughter Rositta, age 21, b. in Tennessee, grandson, George Vanzant, age 13, b. in Arkansas; granddaughter Josephine Vanzant, age 11, born in Arkansas, and granddaughter Rosina Vanzant, age 8, b. in Arkansas. I believe that the Vanzant (or Van Zandt) grandchildren listed here are also the grandchildren of B. Frank Vanzant listed nines lines above James B. Nichols’ family on the 1880 Census.
James B. Nichols and Sarah E. Hilton are my gg-grandparants. They were married 8 March 1849 in Franklin Co., Tennessee. They were both probably born in Tennessee. Sarah E. Hilton might be related to Samuel P. Hilton who married Nancy Jones on 17 January 1843 in Franklin Co., Tennessee. Children of James B. and Sarah E. Hilton Nichols are: James H. Nichols, b. abt 1854 in Tennessee, m. Mary A. who was born about 1859in Tennessee; Mary B. Nichols, b. abt 1855 in Tennessee; Joseph A. Nichols, b. abt 1857 in Tennessee; William Thomas Nichols, b. 2 Jan. 1860 in Tennessee, d. 13 Sept. 1946 probably in Vashti, Clay Co., Texas, m. Mary Emma "Molly" Fields abt 1879 in Missouri. Both are buried at old Vashti Cemetery next to the Methodist Church in Vashti, Clay Co., Texas; Louisa C., b. abt 1863 in Tennessee, m. probably Thomas George abt 1878 in Sharp Co., Arkansas, son of John N. George and Paulina R.; John S., b. abt 1868 in Tennessee, Frank S., b. April 1870 d. between 180-1871 in Arkansas; Frank Lewis Nichols, b. 11 apr 1871 in Lawrence or Sharp Co., Arkansas, m. Mattie Lee Cantrell 3 June 1900 in Wise Co., Texas, d. 18 March 1959 in Bowie, Montague Co., Texas.
