With respect to family #15 in Coosa Co, AL, from my original post in Alabama George Family Puzzles, I have received a response from Mary Ann Cole in Kenosha, WI who is researching Shinn and Blackburn families. She provided information from the Index of Old Wars Pension Files, 1815-1926 p 648 Sheen, Benjamin, alias Benjamin Shinn, widow Rebecca Rooks, WA-26238R filed 3 Jan 1910 in Florida, served in 1st GA Vol IN in Mexican War as Private. Rebecca V. Rooks formerly widow of Benjamin Shinn.
Rebecca Virginia Rooks declared that she was 86 and in Pensacola, FL 24 Dec 1909. That she is the widow of Benjamin Shinn, aka Benjamin Sheen, enrolled in Griffin, GA 26 May 1846 and discharged on 28 August 1846 and died on his way home from the Army in 1846. That soldier was born in Meckelenburg, Co, NC. That she, Rebecca Virginia Goodery married him at Chambers Co, AL on 5 Jan 1841 and neither had been married before. She had since married EDWARD GEORGE on 2 July 1848 and Thomas Rooks 11 May 1863. She had three children with Shinn, Erastus Benjamin b. 5 May 1842 Auburn, Macon Co, AL; D/Ron Parindo b. Jan 9, 1844 Talladega, AL; Deborah Naomi b. Oct 13, 1845 Greenville, Merriworth Co, GA, all children are dead.
(Children of Shinn and his first wife, Tabitha Blackburn were Susan, Ransom, James Madison Shinn b. ca 1833 d. Battle of Seven Pines; Elizabeth Shinn and Josiah Shin b. 4 Aug 1837 NC d. 1 Oct 1904 GA)
The Rebecca George of Coosa Co listed as HH in 1850 with Pamelia, Margaret and Mary appears born ca 1800 SC. The Rebecca George above appears to be b. ca 1823. What is the connection, Who is Edward George and where did they marry in 1848?
Note that a James M. Shinn m. Pernelia George in Coosa Co. Is he the son of Benjamin Shinn? Help sort this out? W. Peyton George [email protected]
