You may not have information on David's background. He was ason of William Gentry (< Richard-III < Samuel-II < Nicholas- I).He was born in Surry Co., NC, in about 1809.His mother may have been Gracey Ann Padgett, Williams first wife according to "The Gentry Family in America" (William is #240 in GFA). A letter to the family of David's older brother Ephraim, by one of the latter's daughters refers to Ephraim having three "whole brothers" and a sister, Richard, David, William and Rachel. This implies that David was born before William's second marriage (to Betsy Day) which took place in April 1809.You can read more about William and his father in http://www.gentryjournal.org/archives/jgg0210.htmhttp://www.gentryjournal.org/archives/jgg0210.htm.
David was in the 1810 Surry Co. census with his father and then was in Grayson Co., VA in 1830.In 1840, his children are listed under his name in Ashe Co., NC (where his uncle Nicholas Gentry lived), but the parents were not present. In 1850, he was present in Wise Co., VA with his second wife, Dorothy.
