Connie, I have a theory about your Lafayette Gentry. Take a look at the transcribed 1850 census on www.usgenweb.com under Chariton County. On page 193B, in Clark Township, there is family #399, which is the family of John and Rebecca Abner.Next is family #400, Mary McGowen and her 3 children. Then family #401 is Lafayette McGowen, age 20, born MO; Ann, age 24, born KY; Susan, age 10, born MO; Nancy, age 4, born MO; and Matilda, age 1, born MO.
My theory is that Lafayette "McGowen" is actually Lafayette Gentry.I think it's very possible that there was an error when this census was taken.Mary McGowen is my great-great-great grandmother. So I've studied this census entry a lot and tried to fit Lafayette into the McGowen family. But I don't think he's a McGowen.
Please take a look at this census page and let me know what you think.
Nora
