Your Susannah GENTRY was a sister to Uriah Ervin GENTRY (1830-1910), whose bio appears (I believe) in the White Co., AR, history book by Goodspeed:
"Uriah E. GENTRY is a native of South Carolina and a son of Cornelius and Mary (JOHNSON) GENTRY, also natives of that State, where they lived until after their marriage, removing thence to Georgia when our subject was a child.Later they became located in Tennessee, and in 1836 in Alabama, where the father died in 1842 at the age of thirty-nine [...] The family consisted of nine children the following being the only ones living at this time: Susanah (now Mrs. PROVENCE), Thomas, Uriah E., M.V. and Parthenia (wife of Elisha BASS)."
Uriah E. Gentry appears in his mother's household on the 1850 US census of Tishomingo Co., MS (p. 99, hh #174).Also in the household was an older brother (Thomas P., b. 1828 GA) and younger siblings (unfortuantely, I did not note their names; only that they were b. in GA, TN and AL).Mary [JOHNSON] GENTRY claimed to have been b. c1805 in SC.
Uriah md/1 Mary Elizabeth DAVIS, d/o Robert DAVIS and Nancy CHEEK, 20 Dec 1852 in Tishomingo County, according to published marriage records. The families of Robert DAVIS and Uriah GENTRY moved in the late 1850s to Red River Co., TX, where they appear on the 1860 census (p. 66, hh #139 & #140, respectively).Mary [JOHNSON] GENTRY was enumerated with M.N. (sic) GENTRY in hh #119.M.N. (probably Martin Van Buren GENTRY) was b. c1838 in AL.
Uriah GENTRY rec'd from the State of Texas a 160-acre preemption grant on Little White Oak Creek about 13 miles southeast of Clarksville, the seat of Red River County. The original records are located at the General Land Office in Austin; however, this particular transaction also was recorded in Red River County 29 Aug 1863 (deed bk N, p 689).
The online land-grant records (Red River Co. GenWeb archives) show that your George W. PROVINCE (sic) and one U.R. PROVENCE also rec'd homestead grants in Red River County.George's land was located on Little White Oak Creek, about a half mile east of Uriah's homestead.U.R. PROVENCE rec'd two tracts and both are in this general area (about 4 or 5 miles southeast of Cuthand).
Uriah GENTRY left Red River County about 1867 and moved to Independence Co., AR, where he remained several years before settling in White County.
I am neither GENTRY nor a PROVENCE descendant.I came across this information while researching the CHEEK and DAVIS families.I hope it helps.
