His early life is proving to be something of a mystery. Census records show him to be born around 1819 in Cumberland, England yet he spent the majority of his life in Hertfordshire (where his family were from) and later in London. From your post I see that he was also in Sheffield at an early age with his father and two older brothers, can you shed any more light on this or where you found the information that they moved from Sheffield in 1821.
