Girolamo GENTILE, Dewsbury, Yorks, England 1890's
Hi have information about a family of Gentile's in Chester, Cheshire and Dewsbury, Yorkshire who married into the D'Ponio family in 1912. This information relates strongly to other family names of
BIANCO
DEPONIO/Di PONIO
De MARCO
De RUBIES
GIZZI
MAZZONE/MAZZONI
have pasted this message in loads of places, so appologise for the wierd message now, but the information si all in there, and anyone who has any links to any people in here please get in touch. I have been searchign for 4 years for this family, and this is a semi last ditch attempt!
my nan has alwasy spoken about the Gizzi's and also the De Rubies and others.
My grandad always called them the Mazones too, rather than sounding the I on the end of mazzoni
Well I think we might be onto something.
On the marriage certificate i have it has Joseph D'Ponio marrying Maria Gentili (gentile) in Chester in 1912 there was a C Mazzoni on the certificate as a witness. Her father was Giroloramo Gentile, and his wife was Annie. She had several sisters, some where born in Dewsbury like her, and others in Chester, Cheshire.
My grandfather was also born in oswestry and lived in Rhyll!!as did his family before and after the war.
This must all be a bit weird if there isnt a conection somwehere.
anyway, Rhyll, Swansea, cardiff, birkenhead, chester all feature as do others, but it seems the oldest Deponios changed their names to Marco aswell at some time.
there are no deponios on the 1881 in any variant, i have tried them all, and the only ones that come close are in london.
It migth be worth having a chat together about this.
maybe your relatives might remember somethign of my family.
This is what i have off the top of my head:
My grandad Joseph Deponio was oldest son of Joseph Deponio and Maria Gentile. Her father was Girolamo Gentile and she was actually born in Dewsbury.
There were a lot of children:
Annie Rose (known as Rose)
Micheal Angelo(known as angie)
Winnifred Vena or Lavinia (known as Vinnie, or Binnie)
John Anthony (known as Tony)
Mary Angelina (known as Lena)
And my grandad Joseph Jerome, known wierdly and contrary to his brothers and sisters by his first name -Joey!
they were all born 1913/4 onwards. My grandad being born 1919. in Oswestry.
Joseph Senior had a brother Michealangelo Deponio and he married Maria Rosa Esmerelda Bianco. Here the story deepens.
She was a foundling, found on the step of a farm when she was about 1 year old.
She was taken to the court in Venafro in Monte Cassino, southern Italy, and given the name Maira Bianco. I have these documents in archaic italian!! and translations.
very interesting. Anyway, she was found by some woman called Serafina, and its all a bit boring, but one of the witnesses was an ANTONIO D'APOLONIO!!!!
this I felt was too near Deponio or D'Ponio when you say it!
anyway, who ever had these two boys Jospeh and Michealangelo(and there are lots of rumours about workhouses in cardiff and swansea- which i cant find any info either )
then we dont really know.
WE DO know that on Josephs marriage he lists his father as Antonio Mazzoni(deceased) so its all a bit of a mystery.
Your mentioning Gizzis is VERY interesting, as my nan keeps metioning that name. There has to be someone alive who knows about this stuff and is willing to talk, as a lot arent. there are 3 siblings of my grandad still
alive and NONE of them will tell me anything. Its just too odd. They changed their names, they avoided the census, and believe me i have trawled through it for 4 years! and i still cant find them. One of my great aunts told me i
would actually never find anything. There are no photos of them, certificates, rings, jewelry or trinkets, nothign to remember them by. This was their parents and grandparents!! I just cant believe they would erase their memory. Their reason was that "there were too many memories" so they got rid of it all. burnt it infact. I just find it even MORE fascinatnig now obviously.
I have been lucky enough to have traced every side of my tree now except this one, and i must do it. The longer it
goes on the more interesting, and also I really really think you WILL be able to help. I dont know how but I think there has to be some little nugget in those Gizzis and Mazzones somewhere that will eventully come to
the surface.
I have even considered paying a professional to do it, but i dont think i would believe them if they found anything.
Anyway, i am really really aware that this isnt your family, but I would appreciate any info on mazzones in Rhyll and also Gizzi's and any gems you might come accross. Please ask about and see if anyone remembers this family
of d'ponio's or Deponios or any other way you like to spell it.
cheers
eternally greatful for bending your ear
