I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. We used to be able to go to "Records," then "Census," and then you could choose the state and year and BROWSE through the index, which is soooo important to be able to do when a name is mis-spelled and/or mis-indexed. And as usual, the "help" here doesn't know enough about their own site to be giving out advice on how to use it. These indices were only online this way for about five years! Now you can only access the census records through their KLUDGE of a search engine.
Alas, Genealogy.com and GenealogyLibrary.com have the WORST search engines I've ever used. None of their programmers seem to understand the needs of genealogists and none of their genealogists -- if they have any -- seem to understand enough about computers to realize how abysmally crude the search tools are here. They're sitting on a mountain of data that's positively EXCRUCIATING to access. Every time I have to use it I swear I will NOT renew.
And now they've taken three giant steps BACKWARDS. Hey, someone roll out a backup tape and put the census records back the way they were!
