"That was not a family file" error message

In order to preserve my data, I backed up my entire folder labeled "Sierra" onto a cd rom disc. The folder included the Generations program and my family files. It was the only way I could backup all my family data. I tried the manual version of backing up, but it would not allow it for some strange reason.

To verify I made a good copy, I then put the cd into my other computer and was able to read my files ok, from the cd itself.

Then I loaded the folder from the cd onto that second computer's c drive, took the cd out, and then opened up the folder to read the files on my c drive but got the error message that read: "That was not a family file"

What I don't understand is why the message doesn't come up when I am reading the file from the cd, but then get the message when reading the file from the folder that I loaded into my c drive.

If this question can't be answered, I still need to know how I can backup my family files in case I get a crash.
