Does FTM 3.0 include gedcom export? If so then you can export via gedcom and import into any program which accepts gedcoms (essentially all of the current ones). An FTM version that old will at best be able to export to the gedcom v4 standard - if it doesn't support that you may have problems.

I don't know (and doubt) that FTM 11.0 will be able to upgrade the file format of FTM 3.0 to the current FTM standard. You may have to look around for people who have older versions of FTM available and upgrade in a couple of steps.

Generations is a good program but the manufacturer will not be doing any further work on developing it. It works great for many people and many purposes. Other good programs are Legacy (the standard version is a free download, this lets you play with it and decide if you want to upgrade to the deluxe version) and TMG [The Master Genealogist]. The latter is a powerful program that many people find not too user-friendly.

Mike Hobart
