I use Generations 6 routinely under XP. What you most likely are encountering is the disappearing data syndrome that happens with certain other programs and drivers causing conflicts with Generations. Take a look at the Generations Tip on program interactions at http://users.sisna.com/mhobart
The Windows feature of shared support files (.dlls) can greatly simply programming but the converse is that changes in these can cause problems with other files that use the same .dll files ;-(
Gedcom exchange between programs often has problems because it is only an ad hoc standard that programmmers/manufacturers can implement as they wish ;-( There used to be a great utility to help with these conversions called Gedcom Explorer (previously at http://www.gedx.com). That site and the registration option for this time-limited shareware appear to have gone away. You may still be able to find gedx on download sites on the web. You can install and use it for 30 days. Gary Bonham's program includes many 'filters' that help with gedcom import/export problems between different programs.
If anyone has updated info on Gedcom Explorer please let me know.
