6.0 on XP - still a mystery
Posted by: Ross Davies (ID *****8053) Date: December 22, 2003 at 19:43:06

I've read everything I can in the last couple of days about 6.0 and XP. Including Michael Hobart's "Installing & Using Generation Software on Windows XP". Which I presume is what Michael directs everyone to when he replies - always so politely and helpfully. But that confused me when it referred to V6 and upwards, is my 5.2 upgraded to 6.0 in the V6 and upwards category? I presume not or there'd be no need to talk about workarounds, if there was a simple upgade option.
It is noticeable though how often the question and issue comes up, and the above page didn't tell me all I needed to know. Like other possibilities for getting around the issues. Maybe an "Everything You Need to Know about Generations Software and Windows XP" page, to which people in trouble could be specifically linked in reply, as I wasn't sure if the page I found on Michael's site was the one he had meant.
An issue that didn't seem to be dealt with was whether the compatibility mode would make any difference. One post here has mentioned it, but would it do anything for the 5.2 issues?
Another issue would be the pros and cons of of maintaining a 98 partition, specifically to run Generations, whatever version would have run on 98. Would a dual-boot PC be worth it?
And then there is the issue of maintaining a 98 PC, specifically to run Generations. I'd entertain this as well, so valuable is my database. And so uncertain am I about the future path for Generations software. I've seen other posts contemplate this, isn't it sad that such lengths are contemplated, through lack of maintenance and support. But what of the issues of long-term maintenance of a 98 PC?
Or are we better off paying up to $30 for what may be the last version, albeit one that will work with XP? I object to buying software if there is no intention to support it into the future - what of the XP replacement? Does this problem start all over again?
One specific issue I have at the moment is confusion about the chart problem with 6.0 and XP. According to the advice, I should have trouble printing saved charts. I've only started, but mine seem to print fine. I get the black ones on screen when first created, but they print fine. Then when saved, closed and reopened, they look fine and print fine. I've got Service Pack 1 for XP. And have the 6.0 upgrade/fix for 5.2. So have I misunderstood this problem, or am I missing something and will mine go bad eventually?
Merry Christmas to all determined Generations fans and supporters.
