Moving on from Generations
My father has been using Generations (6.0 I think) for some years and has liked it a lot.Recently he has done something to his computer that has broken it, though he thinks he still has an intact .UDS file (and almost certainly has a good backup copy).
I will be visiting over the Christmas break and will try to get Generations reinstalled and working again and I don't expect that will be a huge problem.
I do think though that it may be time to move on to more modern software and we may look at an upgrade to Windows 7 whilst I am there.
I don't do much with genealogy but when I do I like to use TMG - I work in IT and it's complexity doesn't faze me (much). This will not work for my father though, as he has come to computers late in life and finds TMG a little overwhelming - he tried it for a few months and didn't warm to it.
I have read that Legacy or Family Historian might be suitable replacements and would welcome any comments on these or other candidates, especially with a view to software that provides a similar user experience.Dad mainly uses the software to store BDM details with a few scanned images - little use of charting or elaborate citation or sources.Within reason, cost is not a primary consideration.
I have read some of the posts on the problems with Generations 6.0 GEDCOM exports and will either try doing the file edits as suggested or will throw myself on the mercy of the cloud to get the file converted with a later version of Generations.
Many thanks for your time.
