For information, I have discovered that there were two applications causing Generations data to be lost. These were :
Softex Omnipass v 5.00.12 - scureapp.exe
DESlock+ v 3.2.4 - dlpmon32.exe
Once these were disabled at startup using MSconfig the problem was resolved, except that both these programs are key to my data security!!
